- At the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, it is the Japanese artist Andō Hiroshige (1797-1858) who is attracting attention this spring.
The exhibition 東海道 Tōkaidō. Dreamscapes by Andō Hiroshige unveils the series of some fifty xyloglyphic prints (obtained by woodblock printing), preserved in the museum’s collections. They illustrate imaginary landscapes leading from Edo (Tokyo’s former name) to the imperial capital of the time, Kyoto. These prints are among the earliest examples of autonomous landscape figuration in Japanese art.
