May in bloom!

In May, which is synonymous with flowering and springtime exuberance, why not discover heritage gardens. Seasonal programs offer unusual opportunities to “experience” Quebec heritage and art. On the cooler or gloomier days of the month, there is always the alternative of travelling through images: new exhibitions are waiting to be discovered.

Printmaking and its various techniques are firmly in the museum spotlight.

  • As we mentioned last month, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec is honoring one of the great Dutch masters of this art.

  • At the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, it is the Japanese artist Andō Hiroshige (1797-1858) who is attracting attention this spring.

The exhibition 東海道 Tōkaidō. Dreamscapes by Andō Hiroshige unveils the series of some fifty xyloglyphic prints (obtained by woodblock printing), preserved in the museum’s collections. They illustrate imaginary landscapes leading from Edo (Tokyo’s former name) to the imperial capital of the time, Kyoto. These prints are among the earliest examples of autonomous landscape figuration in Japanese art.

Andō Hiroshige (1797-1858), Goyu, women stopping travellers (御油 旅人留女), no 36 of the serie « Fifty three steps to Tōkaidō », ca 1833-1834, woodcut engraving (nishiki-e), 24.3 x 36.6 cm (sheet), 22.9 x 35.3 cm (image), editor : Takenouchi Magohachi (Hoeidō). To continue your Japanese immersion while discovering the blossoming of nature in gardens ranked among the most sumptuous in the world, opt for Domaine Joly de Lotbinière, located in Ste-Croix on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River.

  • The estate offers an introduction to Shinrin Yoku, a slow, silent, contemplative and sensory walk through the old-growth forest and gardens of the site, classified as a Quebec Heritage Site and National Historic Site of Canada.

  • You will discover the Maison de Pointe Platon, of course, and you will also be able to indulge in gourmet pleasures from May onwards, with tastings of native dishes and drinks based on gin or local spirits.
